After a couple of weeks go by and only a few stray people show up at your website, you decide to try and "optimize" your website around your main keyword in hopes that you just might rank well in 1 of the millions of search engines. Another couple of weeks go by and still no luck.

After your site is submitted to search engines it does not guarantee anything.  It is the beginning to the waiting period before a site will get crawled by the search engines so you can be indexed on the internet directory so when people search the keywords and your entry appears in the engines search results that you begin to be displayed. 

All search engines will display the search results as fairly as  possible.   The large search engines are of course the most popular and get most amount of hits so they too have challenges in how they display results.  If there is 1 million search results from the keywords they must fairly display the results.   So they have their own way of ranking websites so you get the most relevant search results.   This is important for the searcher and the engine because relevant results brings the searcher back.  

There is also a large amount of web traffic from the less popular search engines that could make any website successful.   Once success is accomplished, one could re-invest their earnings into becoming even more powerful on search results in the major search engines.   The fault most people make is being popular with only the most popular engines, while ignoring the fact that it could be much easier to get traffic from the less busy corners of the internet.
